1) What are nerves?
Answer: Nerves are the communication lines for transmission of impulses from one part of body to another. Nerves are elongated, slender, thread like structures arising from the brain and spinal cord.

2) What is a neuron (or a nerve cell)?
Answer: Neuron (nerve cell) is a highly specialized cell 
which acts as the structural and functional unit of nervous system.
3) Name the three membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
Answer: The three membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord are duramater, piamater and archanoid mater.


4) What is cerebrospinal fluid?
Answer: Cerebrospinal fluid is the fluid present between the layers of meninges.


5) Where is cerebrospinal fluid found?
Answer: Cerebrospinal fluid is found between piamater and archanoid matter.


6) Write down the surface area of the cerebrum.
Answer: The surface area of the cerebrum is about 2200 cm³.


7) What are the two parts of central nervous system?
Answer: The two parts of the central nervous system are: 
            (i) Brain and         (ii) Spinal cord


8) What is peripheral nervous system?
Answer: The nervous system formed by cranial nerves and spinal nerves is called peripheral nervous system.


9) Give two examples of exocrine gland.
Answer: Two examples of exocrine glands are:
        (i) Salivary gland and         (ii) Gastric glands


10) What is the main function of cerebrospinal fluid?
Answer: The main function of cerebrospinal fluid is to protect the brain and spinal cord from external injury.

11) What is central nervous system?
Answer: The nervous system formed by the brain and spinal cord is called central nervous system.


12) What is nervous system?
Answer: Nervous system is the network of organs and tissues that controls and co-ordinates all the activities of a body with the help of nerves.


13) Write two substances produced by testes.
Answer: The two chemicals produced by testes are:
            (i) Sperm and
            (ii) Testosterone


14) How many numbers of spinal nerves are present in human body?
Answer: In human body, 31 pairs of spinal nerves are present. 


15) What is cerebellum or small brain?
Answer: Cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain which occupies 10% of the weight of the brain.


16) What is spinal cord?
Answer: Spinal cord is a long cylindrical structure that arises from the medulla oblangata and passes through the neural canal of the vertebral column.


17) State the major function of the spinal cord.
Answer: The major function of the spinal cord can be given as:
      (i) Spinal cord connects a large part of the peripheral nervous system to the brain.
      (ii) It controls reflex actions.


18) Which part of central nervous system conducts reflex action?
Answer: Spinal cord conducts reflex action.


19) What is meant by ganglion? Write its function.
Answer: A ganglion is the group of nerves tissues near the spinal cord which is made by grey mater. The function of a ganglion is to communicates with the spinal cord and the brain.


20) State the function of mid-brain.
Answer: The functions of mid-brain are:
        (i) The mid-brain controls reflex movement of the head, neck and trunk in response to the visual and auditory stimuli.
        (ii) It also controls the reflex movements of the eye muscles, changes in pupil size and shape of the eye lens.
