1) What are metals?
Answer: Metals are the elements that form positive ions by losing electron/s. They are malleable and ductile.


2) Write any two properties of copper.
Answer: Any two properties of copper are as follows:
    (i) Copper is reddish brown metal which is highly malleable and ductile.
    (ii) It is an extremely good conductor of heat and electricity.


3) Write any two ores of aluminium.
Answer: Any two ores of aluminium are:
    (i) Bauxite (Al₂O₃.2H₂O).
    (ii) Cryolite (Na₃AlF₆).


4) Which metal is obtained from ore of magnetite or haematite?
Answer: Iron (Fe) is obtained from ore magnetite or haematite.


5) What are ores? Give any two examples.
Answer:  Those minerals from which the metals can be extracted conveniently and profitably are called ores. The two examples are  Haematite and Argentite.


6) What is an alloy?
Answer:  An alloy is the mixture of two or more metals or metals and non-metal.


7) Write any two physical properties of iron.
Answer: Any two physical properties of iron are as follows:
    (i) Pure iron is a shiny grey-white metal.
    (ii) It is malleable and ductile.


8) Write down the symbol, atomic number and atomic weight of iron.
Answer: The symbol of iron is Fe, atomic number is 26 and atomic weight is 56 amu.


9) Write two ores of silver.
Answer: The two ores of silver are as follows:
    (i) Argentite or silver glance (Ag₂S).
    (ii) Horn silver (AgCl)


10) Write the name of any two metalloids.
Answer:  Any two metalloids are as follows:
    (i) Silicon
    (ii) Germenium.

11) Write down the position of iron in the modern periodic table.
Answer: Iron is placed in the first transition series in the fourth period and d-block of the modern periodic table.


12) What is steel? Why is it used?
Answer: Steel is the alloy of iron and carbon. It is used for manufacturing weapons, vehicles, household appliances, etc.


13) Write a difference between metal and non-metal on the basis of density.
Answer: Metals have more density but non-metals have less density.


14) Write down the, electronic configuration of copper in the modern periodic table.
Answer:

15) Write the atomic number and atomic weight of copper.
Answer: The atomic number of copper is 29 and its atomic weight is 63.5.


16) Write down the symbol, atomic number and atomic weight of aluminium.
Answer: The symbol of aluminium is Al, atomic number is 13 and atomic weight is 27.


17) Which metal is extracted from bauxite?
Answer: Aluminium metal is extracted from bauxite.


18) Write the name and molecular formula of one of ore of silver.
Answer: One ore of silver is Argentite (Ag₂S).


19) Write any two physical properties of aluminium.
Answer:  Any two physical properties of aluminium are as follows:
    (i) Aluminium is a bluish-white metal.
    (ii) It is a light metal having density 2.7 gm/cm³.


20) What is blister copper?
Answer: Blister copper is about 99.4% pure copper obtained by heating the powder if chalcopyrite with air in a big furnace.
