FORCE

Part-1

Very short questions and answers for S.E.E. students

Force

Questions and answers to practice for S.E.E. examination

1)What is gravitation or gravitational force?
Answer: The force with which any two objects attract each other is called gravitation or gravitational force.

2) State the factors that affect the gravitational force.
Answer: The factors that affect the gravitational force are:
    (i) Mass of two heavenly bodies.
    (ii) Distance between their centers.

3) What is heliocentric theory?
Answer: Heliocentric theory states that the sun lies at the center of the universe and all the planets and satellites revolve around the sun.

4) What is geocentric theory?
Answer: Geocentric theory states that the earth remains at the center of the universe and the sun, moon and other planets revolve around the earth.

5) State Newton's universal law of gravitation.
Answer: Newton's universal law of gravitation states that, "The force of attraction between two bodies is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers."

6) What is gravity? Give its SI unit.
Answer: The force which pulls an object towards the center of planet (the earth) is called gravity. Its SI unit is Newton (N).

7) What is Newton's gravitational constant (G)? Write down its numerical value and SI unit.
Answer: Newton's gravitational constant (G) is the gravitational existing between two bodies of unit masses placed at a unit distance from their centers.
The numerical value of gravitational constant (G) is 6.67 x 10⁻¹¹ and its SI unit is Nm²/Kg².

8) Write one effect of the gravitation of the sun and moon on the ocean.
Answer: Tides form in the ocean due to effect of gravitation of the sun and moon.

9) Who measured the value of gravitational constant?
Answer: Henry Cavendish (1730-1810) measured the value of gravitational constant by using a sensitive balance.

10) What is the value of acceleration due to gravity at the pole of the earth?
Answer: The value of acceleration due to gravity (g) at the polar region of the earth is 9.83 m/s².

11) Out of solid and liquid, which object has more effect of gravitation?
Answer: Out of solid and liquid, the effect of gravitation is more on liquid than on solid.

12) Under which condition the value of gravitational force and gravitational constant becomes equal?
Answer: When two bodies of unit mass are kept 1 m apart from their centers, the value of gravitational force and gravitational constant becomes equal.

13)Write down one effect due to gravitational force of the sun and moon on ocean of the earth.
Answer: Formation of tides in the ocean is one effect due to the gravitational force of the sun and moon on the ocean of the earth.

14) What is the value of acceleration due to gravity 'g' at the center of the earth?
Answer: The value of acceleration due to gravity at the center of the earth is zero.

15) Write the formula to find the weight of an object.
Answer: The formula to find the weight of the object is:
            W = m x g

16) What is gravitational field?
Answer: The gravitational field of the earth or a planet is defined as the area around the earth or planet up to where the gravity of the planet has its influence on an object.

17) What is free fall?
Answer: When an object is falling towards the surface of the earth only under the influence of gravity without external resistance, the fall of the object is called free fall.

18) What is the effect of gravity on the falling object?
Answer: Gravity produces an acceleration on the falling object.

19) Write down the value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon in S.I. unit.
Answer: The value of acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon is 1.67 m/s².

20) State the factor that affect the gravity of a planet.
Answer: The factors that affect the gravity of a planet are:
    (i) Mass (m) of the planet and
(ii) Radius (R) of the planet.
