1) Write one special property of water glass.
Answer: The special property of water glass is that, it dissolves in water.


2) What is glazing?
Answer: In order to make ceramic materials attractive, shiny, non-porous and smooth, glaze, color and polish are applied to them. This process is called glazing.


3) Write one special feature of sodium silicate or potassium silicate glass.
Answer: One special feature of sodium silicate or potassium silicate glass is:
        (i) This glass dissolves in water.


4) What are the raw materials used to prepare water glass?
Answer: The raw materials for making water glass are:
    (i) Silica (SiO2)
    (ii) Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) or potassium carbonate (K₂CO₃)


5) What do you mean by RCC?
Answer: RCC stands for Reinforced Cement Concrete. It is the concrete having an iron framework inside it as a support. It is very strong material for construction.


6) Name the chemical which increases the setting time of cement.
Answer: Gypsum (CaSO₄. 2H₂O) increases the setting time of cement.


7) Define cement clinker.
Answer: Cement clinker is a mixture of a pea-sized balls which consists of calcium silicate and calcium aluminate.


8) Define mortar.
Answer: Mortar is a mixture of cement, sand and water which is used as plastering material and to join bricks, stones, etc.


9) Define polymer.
Answer: A polymer is a very big molecule formed by the combination of a large number of small molecules called monomers.


10) What is monomer? Give examples.
Answer: Monomer is a small organic molecule which can combine together in large number to form a big molecule called polymer.



11) What is ceramics? 
Answer: Ceramics (Greek-keramos-potter's clay) is a special type of clay which contains compounds of carbon, nitrogen, silica and oxygen.


12) What are plastics?
Answer: Plastics are the artificial materials made by the polymerization of carbon containing monomers.


Answer: PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a strong thermoplastic which is prepared by polymerization of vinyl chloride ( CH₂=CHCl).


14) What is incineration?
Answer: Incineration is the process of burning of solid wastes at about 1000⁰C.


15) What is detergent?
Answer: Synthetic petrochemical obtained from hydrocarbon which is more soluble than soap is called detergent. e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate.


16) Write the two symptoms of deficiency of nitrogenous fertilizers in plant.
Answer: Two symptoms of deficiency of nitrogenous fertilizers in plants are:
    (i) Leaves becomes yellow
    (ii) Fruits and seeds become small.


17) What is phosphorous fertilizer?
Answer: Phosphorous fertilizers are the fertilizers containing phosphorous.


18) What are potassium fertilizer? Why are they essential for plants?
Answer: Chemical fertilizers containing potassium are called potassium fertilizer. They are necessary for:
        (i) making roots and shoots strong and healthy.
        (ii) growth of flower.


19) What are organic insecticides?
Answer: Organic insecticides  are synthetic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.


20) What are organic fertilizers? Give one example.
Answer: The fertilizer made from decay of animals and plants or the waste products of animals are called organic fertilizers. For example compost manure.
