1) Which type of fiber are orlan and silk?
Answer: Orlan is a synthetic fiber where as silk is a natural fiber.


2) What is called chemical pollution?
Answer: The environmental pollution caused by various chemicals like insecticides, chemical fertilizers, synthetic cleaners and other industrial chemicals is called chemical pollution.


3) What are bio-degradable solid wastes? Write with examples.
Answer: The solid wastes that decay and decompose after some time are called bio-degradable solid wastes. Examples: Dead animals and plants, waste paper, clothes, thrown food stuffs, etc.


4) What are non bio-degradable solid wastes? Write with examples.
Answer: The solid wastes that do not decay and decompose for a long time are called non bio-degradable solid wastes. Examples: Plastics, bottles, glass pieces, metals, etc.


5) What is solid waste management?
Answer: The collection, transportation, processing and reuse of waste materials is called solid waste management.


6) What are the raw materials used to make bakelite?
Answer: The raw materials which are used to make bakelite are carbolic acid and formaldehyde.


7) What is soap? Give one example.
Answer: A soap is defined as a sodium salt of higher fatty acid which has cleansing properties in water, e.g. sodium stearate (NaCOOC₁₇H₃₅).


8) What is saponification?
Answer: The process of making soap by the hydrolysis of fats and oil with alkalis is called saponification.


9) Name the raw materials used for making soap.
Answer: The raw materials used for making soap are:
    (i) Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
    (ii) Animal fat or vegetable oil.


10) Write down the full form of DDT.



11) Write the name of a carbamate insecticide.
Answer: Begon is a carbamate insecticide which contain amino group (-NH₂).


12) What are fertilizers? Name two types of fertilizers.
Answer: Substances that are used to increase the fertility of soil are called fertilizers. Two types of fertilizers are:
    (i) Organic fertilizers and
    (ii) Chemical/Inorganic fertilizers.


13) Why is nitrogen essential for plants?
Answer: Nitrogen is essential for plants for following purposes.
    (i) for rapid growth
    (ii) to increase protein content.


14) Write the name of nitrogenous fertilizer.
Answer: Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is a nitrogenous fertilizer.


15) Write the name of two chemical fertilizers which provide potassium to the plant.
Answer: Two chemical fertilizers which provide potassium to the plant:
    (i) Potassium nitrate (KNO₃)
    (ii) Potassium sulphate (K₂SO₄).
