PRESSURE

Part-1

Very short questions and answers for S.E.E. students

Pressure

Questions and answers to practice for S.E.E. examination

1) What is one pascal pressure?
Answer: One pascal pressure is the pressure exerted on a surface of area 1 m² by the thrust of 1 N.

2) Name the factors on which the pressure depends.
Answer: Pressure depends on following factors:
    (i) Thrust (F) and     (ii) Area (A)

3) State Pascal's law of liquid pressure.
Answer: Pascal's law of liquid pressure states that, "The pressure is equally transmitted perpendicularly on all sides as pressure is applied in the liquid kept in a closed container."

4) What is upthrust? Write down its SI unit.
Answer: Upthrust is defined as the resultant thrust that a liquid uses to push up a body. The SI unit of upthrust is newton (N).

5) Name any two equipment which are based on Pascal's law of liquid pressure.
Answer: Any two equipment (i.e. hydraulic machine) based on Pascal's law of liquid pressure are:
    (i) Hydraulic brakes
    (ii) Hydraulic jack (lift)

6) Define pressure. Write down its SI unit.
Answer: Pressure is defined as the thrust on unit are of a surface. Its SI unit is N/m² or Pascal (Pa).

7) Write the formula based on Pascal's law.
Answer: The formula based on Pascal's law is F₁/A₁ = F₂/A₂.

8) What is thrust? Write down its SI unit.
Answer: The force acting perpendicularly on a surface is called the thrust. It is a vector quantity. The SI unit of thrust is newton (N).

9) State the law of flotation. Name any one instrument which is constructed on the basis of this law.
Answer: Law of flotation states that, "An object that floats on liquid medium displaces the liquid equal to its weight".

10) What is relative density? Write down its formula.
Answer: The relative density (R.D.) of a substance is the ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water at 4⁰C.
R.D. of a substance = Density of the substance/Density of water at 4⁰C

Pressure

11) Weight of an object is decreased when immersed in water, which law does this statement represent?
Answer: Weight of an object decreases when immersed in water. This statement represent Archimedes' principle.

12) What is density? Write down its SI unit.
Answer: Density of a substance is defined as the mass per unit volume of the substance.
SI unit: Kg/m³ or Kgm⁻³.

13) Write the relation between upthrust and volume of displaced liquid.
Answer: Upthrust is  directly proportional to the volume of displaced liquid.

14) State Archimedes's principle.
Answer: Archimedes's principle states that, "When a body is partially or wholly immersed in a fluid, it experiences an upthrust (or apparent loss in weight) which is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it."

15) What is the relation between upthrust and the density of a liquid?
Answer: Upthrust is directly proportional to the density of a liquid.

16) What is the relation between upthrust and the value of acceleration due to gravity?
Answer: Upthrust is directly proportional to the value of acceleration due to gravity.

17) What is hydraulic pressure or liquid pressure? Write down its unit in CGS system.
Answer: The thrust exerted by a liquid per unit area of the surface is called hydraulic or liquid pressure.
The unit of liquid pressure in CGS system is dyne/cm²

18) Pressure applied on a liquid enclosed in a vessel will be transmitted equally in all directions perpendicular to the surface. Which law is explained by this statement?
Answer: Pascal's law of liquid pressure is explained by this statement.

19) What is atmospheric pressure?
Answer: The pressure exerted by atmosphere per unit area of the earth's surface is called atmospheric pressure.

20) What is the principle of hydraulic machine?
Answer: The principle of hydraulic machine states that, "A large force is developed on the bigger piston when a small force is applied on the smaller piston."
